Our new gymnastics lesson plans and why they’re a vital part of Phys ED

published on 7th June, 2023

It takes time to create structured, detailed PE lesson plans – and for the past few months, that’s exactly what PE Planning has been doing.

We’ve been working on creating brand new gymnastics lesson plans that will soon be available to download in our lesson plans section. We’ll let you know when they’re available – but for now, we’ve included a free preview sample of a lesson plan below. Scroll down to the bottom of this page to take a look.

If you need gymnastics lesson plans now, there are plenty to download on our website here.

What makes gymnastics lessons so important in PE?

Gymnastics lessons are particularly important because they help to provide unique benefits and contributions to the holistic development of students. Let’s take a look at the impact gymnastics lessons can have on students’ physical, mental, and social growth.

Fundamental movement skills

Gymnastics is ideal for developing and refining skills such as locomotor (running and jumping), manipulative (catching and throwing), and stability (balancing, twisting) – all of which form the foundation of various physical activities and sports. Coordination, balance, strength and agility are crucial for a child’s motor development and easily transferable to other sports.

Physical fitness

Gymnastics lesson activities such as tumbling, vaulting bars, and balance beam movements require – and build – strength, endurance, flexibility, and cardiovascular fitness. Regular exposure to these kinds of activities not only improves a student’s strengths and abilities in gymnastics. They also help them achieve more, and enhance their capabilities, in other sports and Phys Ed activities.

Body awareness and control

Thanks to the precise movements required in gymnastics, students will develop body awareness and get confident in how they move. This in turn will improve their skills and confidence in other Phys Ed activities – not to mention everyday life.

Confidence and self esteem

Elementary school gymnastics is great for building confidence, as well as developing social skills and allowing students to recognise and celebrate their successes. Gymnastics lessons can allow children to master new skills and conquer physical challenges, building a sense of accomplishment and self-belief.

Teamwork and cooperation

Generally, gymnastics is an individual sport. But it can also be a great way to develop teamwork amongst children. Try group activities, partner work, and team-based challenges to develop communication skills, as well as an understanding of mutual support. For example, group routines, like synchronised movements, are great to develop students’ social skills, and help to build positive relationships and good sportsmanship.
